Crime Scene

The Detectives Division and Crime Scene Unit have accomplished a great deal over the last thirteen years. The accomplishment that they are most proud of is their 98 % conviction rate for the forty homicides they have investigated and sent to trial. Although the solving of crimes is a TEAM effort by all in the judicial systems, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division has played a fundamental part.

A Crime Scene Detective is an investigator that:

  • Documents
  • Preserves
  • Collects
physical evidence at a Crime Scene.

Our mission is to protect the scene, then document the scene by utilizing photography, video and sketching. The gathering of evidence is a process in which each item collected must be documented, then collected in a fashion that can be preserved for later examination and use in court. The Crime Scene Detective will take charge of the scene. He/she will determine what resources are needed and direct manpower to accomplish the security and protection of that scene.

Currently, The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office has two full-time detectives assigned to the Crime Scene Unit. Both of these detectives are constantly updated on the latest techniques in crime solving and familiarized with the equipment that is needed. They are able to respond to a scene and perform a number of duties at the level of the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab Forensic Investigators. Each detective is able to operate in various fields of Crime Scene Processing and Laboratory work. They can perform basic and advanced tasks in the chemical processing of latent fingerprints, testing and analysis of marijuana, and field testing of narcotics. A large part of their workload is dedicated to examining and analyzing latent fingerprints. Their expertise in this field has lead to the arrest and conviction of numerous suspects in Kitsap County.
